In the XIX century the word "villa" was adopted to describe in a wider sense any suburban house that was isolated in the open country, in opposition to the number of houses very near each other. When people built semi-isolated villas, in the XX century the term lost its original meaning and was overdone.
After the first world war the suburban 'villa' became bungalow.
